About James Odonnell
James joined University College Dublin (UCD) in June 2013 as a college lecturer (Above the Bar). Prior to this appointment, he worked as a senior Scientific Engineering Associate in the Building Technology and Urban Systems Department of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). His current work focuses on the development and deployment of interoperable data models to support optimum building operation as evaluated using whole building energy simulation tools. It is in this area that he contributed to International Energy Agency (IEA Annex 60) and will continue this leading-edge research as part of IBPSA Project 1. In Ireland, he leads a significant scientific work package of the flagship Energy Systems Integration Partnership Project (ESIPP). To date, he is a sole PI for a Marie Curie Career Integration Grant, lead PI on a commercialisation project with industrial partner Zutec, lead UCD PI for the NewTREND Horizon 2020 project. He currently leads the UCD interoperability team that consists of 6 Masters students, 6 PhD students as primary supervisor and 2 Post Doctoral scholars. He has also graduated one PhD student and has managed three previous post doctoral scholars. He is the current president of IBPSA-Ireland and is a board member of BIM Academic Forum of Ireland (BAFI). He taught courses at Stanford University, National University of Ireland Galway, and University College Cork on building performance analysis, building physics and HVAC analysis respectively. Before his research at LBNL, he worked as a Postdoctoral Scholar at the National University of Ireland Galway (NUIG). James has a degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering and a Ph.D. in holistic building performance analysis from University College Cork (UCC). He has acted as external examiner for PhD and MEng. Sc theses in Ireland and Europe.
