I've reported (from 70+ countries) and edited international news and analysis for four decades, most recently at foreign-affairs institutions in Washington. My recent years' work - including op-ed essays, books, a policy newsletter, website articles, speeches and congressional testimony - focuses on violent conflicts (in Ukraine, Afghanistan and elsewhere) and how to stop them. I've been a correspondent and editor at The Washington Post, New York's Newsday and Bloomberg News, based abroad in Rabat, Tunis, Paris, New Delhi, Tashkent, Kyiv, Abidjan and Islamabad. I also reported for Reuters, CBS, France24 and the Christian Science Monitor. I edited a book on the militarization of U.S. foreign policy in the half-century since President Eisenhower warned Americans about the military-industrial complex.
