BreathEasy Program. Founded in 1989 at Cape Town's Red Cross Children’s Hospital by Jane Booth and a team of health care professionals has transformed the lives of over children, families and communities since its inception. This specialized, cost-effective program has enabled parents to provide safe and competent home care to children reliant on a tracheostomy or artificial ventilation. Its fundamental aim is to de-medicalise their lives as much as possible so that they can become the people they are supposed to be. This requires much more than training in the technical requirements of care giving. It includes helping the mothers to find and mobilize their own resources - internal resources as well as family and community networks - and giving them the confidence to take on this responsibility with the assurance of ongoing support from the BreathEasy team.
