Background
About Jason Howard
I have a interest in technology that's only surpassed by a passion for story weaving. Video production combines the two in a technical field that stands to tell a story. I have professional experience with documentary, multi-cam broadcast, commercial, and fiction film productions. For documentaries, I have worked as a cinematographer for independent productions A New Loneliness, Breed and Bootleg, Year of Global Africa, Bonded, and a currently in production docu-series for Hemmings Motor Magazine. Documentary work is a fantastic avenue for story telling, crafting the structure of the story in order to best reach the audience. My love for story telling really came to light by editing award winning documentary RISE, an in progress documentary Bonded, which had an early screening at the Traverse City Film Festival, and A New Loneliness. I started in multi-cam when at school, getting a student job on a crew producing video board content for Michigan State University Athletics department Spartan Vison. There I learned multiple roles including camera op, replay op, TD, and director. After graduating I was brought in to help with shows as well as teach positions and produce shows for MSU volleyball. Through Spartan Vision I was also connected with Big Ten doing replay work with the officiating team for soccer, field hockey, and volleyball. I have begun freelance work in the multi-cam world with car racing shows for Apex Broadcast. Through Apex I have worked camera, replay, and V1 on racing series such as the Ferrari Challenge and GT World Challenge America. I've had the opportunity to learn a ton of technology through Apex including camera builds, fiber networks, switchers, CCU's and custom built computers for replay, graphics, and streaming. My professional experience in fiction film and commercial productions has been in the grip and electric departments as well as production assistant work. A story follows a certain mood and lighting is a critical component that helps convey these emotions. My work varies, from gaffing music videos to grip for feature films, setting up lights and modifying elements with a high regard for safety for cast and crew. While PA'ing for these productions I've also got a sense for what goes into making the wheels of a set turn. While my experience in video production is wide, I find techniques learned in one field can be used in others and I'm always willing to learn and expand my experience. I've always had a drive to understand and push myself to become the best I can in whatever field I pursue.
