My son said he's the dumbest kid in class, but that's not true!""My daughter is so smart. Why does homework take all day!""My son's self-esteem is suffering because he has trouble with reading, but I know he's smart!" As a parent, it's heartbreaking to watch your smart child struggle in school. Accommodating a learning challenge as a long-term solution is NOT necessary or fair. Brain research gives us proof that most learning and attention challenges can be permanently corrected. Yet traditional education is still treating children with learning problems with the “once learning disabled always learning disabled” model. Things have changed! Children and adults do NOT have to go through life crippled and frustrated by their learning challenges. As founder and executive director of Stowell Learning Centers, I get the incredible privilege of walking alongside families as they move from tears and fights over homework to having children who are comfortable, confident, and independent learners. I recently authored a book entitled, “At Wit’s End: A Parent’s Guide to Ending the Struggle, Tears, and Turmoil of Learning Disabilities.” It is available through Amazon. Additionally, my husband David and I are passionate about trying to help children eliminate their learning disabilities in the next five years. Since we can’t possibly do this all on our own, we train and support others around the world (so far, U.S, Canada, and Kuwait) in the clinical and business aspects of developing their own learning centers to do this work. It is an exhilarating mission with terrific people in it! When not working, writing, or speaking, I enjoy spending time with my husband and grown children (when we’re on the same continent!), praising God, riding bikes at the beach, and traveling.
