About Jo Maruyama

Joe Maruyama is a candidate for a Master's in International Studies at the Graduate School of International Cooperation Studies (GSICS), Kobe University. He has been continuously involved in a wide range of grassroots activities. He has shown compassion by volunteering to aid Ukrainian wartime evacuees in Europe and participating in NGO fieldwork in Nepal to empower deaf children. His internships at juvenile training schools and involvement in public-private partnerships supporting children from indigent families by intervention reflect his heartfelt commitment to making a positive impact in the realm of human science. In academia, his focus has been primarily on international relations, particularly global governance, with a current research emphasis on humanitarian governance in the context of climate-induced disasters. He emphasises the importance of maintaining continuous humanitarian assistance in emergencies to uphold essential social systems, including education. Maruyama is set to embark on a traineeship at the UNESCO Almaty Regional Office in Kazakhstan, where he will contribute to the organisation’s operations in Central Asia for 12 months, furthering his dedication to making a difference in the lives of others. His motto is “Empathising with Others and Embracing Others.”
