From my first international trip in 1983 I have found that I must first be a learner from those around me. Only then can I begin to contribute to their lives in ways that are meaningful to them. From 1984-86 my wife and I worked with community leaders in a small rain forest village to help them with literacy, water wells, dental care, and half a dozen other projects they had chosen when we told them "We are here for 2 years to help you with things you cannot achieve entirely on your own." For 24 years in Nigeria we worked with three language communities, starting from the same perspective,"We are here to help you achieve your goals for language development, all of us working together can bring mother tongue literacy, health and civic materials, and translate the Bible into your languages, but the two of us cannot do it alone." Today, involved with global strategic planning, I work the same way:"What is it about your work that truly makes a difference in the lives of others? Let's work together to find ways to maximize what you do that so that your life has the most value possible."
