About John Murphy

It all comes down to trauma, how young people respond, and what happens to them when they do. I have been counseling children, adolescents, and their families for more than a decade, immersing myself in the lives of survivors, observing responses to trauma, and teaching behavioral and communication skills to identify, respond to, and mitigate the effects of trauma in ways that keep families together and functioning independently. I have worked in the mental health and juvenile justice systems in North Carolina to experience the delivery of services to young survivors who have broken the law. I have earned a Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, and I practice trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), and use eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). I write treatment plans, maintain progress notes, and manage multiple cases. I want to work for mental health agencies that offer counseling to at-risk and systemized individuals, and connect people to the services they require to improve their quality of life.
