I have dedicated my academic career to Gerontology and Geriatrics with a special focus on research and efforts to help build the strength of the field in health care and science. My work has been both empirical and conceptual. My empirical research has included supervision of extensive laboratory and clinical research efforts in studying the physiology of human aging and the pathophysiology of common geriatric diseases and syndromes. My conceptual work has focused on the development and application of the theory of Successful Aging, a major current theme in gerontology. Most recently I have focused more broadly on understanding the policies and programs that must be established to facilitate the Successful Aging of Societies. In addition, I have committed substantial time and effort to a variety of approaches to advance the quality of research, clinical care and education in Geriatrics and Gerontology.
