About Joseph Helms
Joseph M. Helms, MD is a physician trained in family medicine and pain management. He graduated from the Johns Hopkins University and UCLA School of Medicine. After medical residency he studied acupuncture in Paris. In 1977 he started teaching and coined the term "medical acupuncture" to describe the blend of classical and modern acupuncture he learned in France. He has been teaching acupuncture to physicians since then, and has trained over five thousand doctors in the United States through programs sponsored by UCLA, Stanford, and HMI. Dr. Helms has been the driving force behind the emergence of medical acupuncture as a discipline in modern American medicine. He is the founding president of the American Academy of Medical Acupuncture, author of the textbook "Acupuncture Energetics," and president of Helms Medical Institute. He has served on acupuncture advisory boards for WHO and the NIH. He has a private practice in Berkeley, California.
