About Julia Rose Sutherland

JRS or Julia Rose Sutherland (She/They) is a storyteller, interdisciplinary artist, and educator/ Assistant Professor at OCAD Univeristy in Toronto, Canada. She is a citizen of the Mi’kmaq, Metepenagiag Nation of Red Bank NB and half-settler descent (Irish and Scottish), with a background in Studio Arts and crafts and New Media. Holding an MFA from the University at Buffalo and a BFA from Alberta College of Art + Design. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, recently showing work at The Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery, Mackenzie Gallery, Bemis Center of Contemporary Art, the Mackenzie Art Gallery, K Art Gallery, The New Gallery, WAAP Gallery, and 59 Rivoli Gallery in Paris, France. She holds a position at OCAD University as an assistant professor in the Faculty of Art in Material Art and Design, where she teaches in the textiles specialty. She is cross-appointed and teaches in the Indigenous Visual Arts Program. Recently, she accepted the position of Special Advisor to the Provost on Indigenous Initiatives at the University. Sutherland is the co-director (alongside Nicole Collins and Lauchlan Reid) of the OCADU Sustainable Colour Lab. The OCADU SCL is a space and community for artists and designers to conduct, create and disseminate knowledge in the area of material colour research. For more information:
