About Kai Engels

My name is Dr Kai Engels and I have been Head of ATS Development at DFS Aviation Services, a subsidiary of DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung, since 2019. I have more than 20 years of experience in the development and management of software projects in the field of air traffic control systems, both in simulation and in the real environment. My passion for computers and software started during my mechanical engineering studies at the Technical University of Darmstadt, where I specialised in programming and computer engineering. In this environment, I continued my education and expanded my skills in programming, software development, distributed systems and Linux administration. I completed my studies in 2001 with a doctorate in which I designed and programmed the communication infrastructure for a flight simulator. In the years that followed until 2018, I gained experience at DFS GmbH in the areas of air traffic control in general, software development of operational air traffic control systems, project management and team and department management. In my current role at DFS Aviation Services GmbH, I am responsible for the department that brings together several teams of software developers and project managers. We offer innovative and customised solutions for air traffic control based on our Surveillance System for Tower and Center (PHOENIX) and Arrival Management (AMAN) products. I am proud of the fact that we have successfully completed many international software projects in recent years to the satisfaction of our customers. My goal is to improve the quality, safety and efficiency of air traffic control systems and to exceed the requirements and expectations of our customers.
