The India and UK based Modi group has a turnover of just over US$ 3 Billion. The group is credited with starting India’s first private airline, India’s first mobile phone company and the famed Indian Premier League (IPL) for Cricket. The group also brought Phillip Morris, Lufthansa, Xerox, Jardine Fleming, Lenzing, Maytag, Disney, and ESPN amongst others into India. Karan Modi has worked in his family business for the last ten years; he started his career with Modi Hoover (a joint venture between the Modi Group and Maytag International, USA) a company involved in the selling of household appliances in India and eventually became its CEO. An MBA from the London Business School, Karan went on to found Regent Realty a real estate company that is developing acres of land outside Delhi. Presently he also sits on the board of Modi Fibers, a textile company that is the largest joint venture till date between India and Austria. Modi Fibers is setting up India’s largest viscose fibre plant with an investment of $200 million. He is also actively involved with Modi Thread Ltd, a sewing thread manufacturer that is credited with having India’s largest range of threads with operations in the UK and India. Karan has been very active with the group’s philanthropic activities that include: • The Floodlight Foundation, which he set up with his wife, Surbhi Modi. This is India’s first non-profit artist management body that will provide a much needed platform for emerging artists in India. The Floodlight Foundation will also support public art in India. • Giving free/subsidized education to underprivileged children a year at schools in and around Modinagar, India. • Promoting Indian contemporary art by holding art exhibitions at renowned International venues like, Tate Britain, London, House of Lords, London, Guggenheim Museum, New York, New York Art Academy, New York, Ueno Art Museum, Tokyo and UNESCO’s Global Forum on ‘Power of Peace’.
