Background
About Keith Bower
I have been a Senior Institute Research Fellow at the University of Manchester (initially UMIST) since 2001. I have published >200 research papers in peer reviewed journals and contributed to numerous international conferences and workshops (~ 350 papers). Research interests include studies of the microphysics and chemistry of warm, mixed phase and ice clouds, of Aerosol-Cloud interactions and the evolution of Aerosol Properties in the boundary layer and free troposphere. I have played a leading role in the design, management and coordination of over 75 major national/international field experiments, and have led many ground based and airborne projects. I have been principal or co-investigator on numerous NERC/EU funded projects (e.g. UTLS-Cirrus; Polluted Troposphere CLOPAP & AMPEP; ACTIVE; VOCALS; DIAMET; BEACHON; COPE; the CLACE-INUIT-INUPIAQ aerosol-cloud interaction experiments at Jungfraujoch, Switzerland; Arctic projects ACCACIA & MAMM; GAUGE; CIRCCREX; MAC (in the Antarctic); DACCIWA; ICE D; CLARIFY, EUREC4A. I have flown as Mission Scientist (>185flights) on UK research aircraft (e.g. FAAM BAe-146), as well as directing other aircraft missions. I have been science coordinator of two directed research programmes at the UK Natural Environment Research Council; the APPRAISE aerosols programme (playing a leading role in the APPRAISE Clouds, ADIENT and ACES field programmes); the NERC CWVC programme (participating in the EMERALD I and II field campaigns out of Adelaide and Darwin). I have been involved in the ongoing development and use of key state of the art instruments (e.g. the Aerodyne AMS; various cloud microphysics and aerosol instrumentation). I manage the Manchester Ice Cloud Chamber facility. Specialties: The Design, Planning, Management and Execution of large national and international field experiments, both from (multiple) ground based sites and/or from various aircraft platforms. Mission Scientist work on research aircraft.
