Background

About Kyle Baylous

After pursuing a biomedical engineering degree for over a year at Stony Brook University with a specialization in biomechanics and biomaterials, I began to notice my additional interest in applied mathematics and statistics. Throughout my course experiences, I have communicated with many graduate teaching assistants and I have talked with one in particular who is involved in research in the AMS department. After looking into this possible opportunity, I became involved in this research under professor Xiaolin Li where I am continuing to learn about mechanics, fluid dynamics, post-processing and also programming. This experience has greatly increased my knowledge in both areas of engineering and mathematics in addition to countless other disciplines. My work ethic in my classes has paid off tremendously as I have received superb grades in all of my classes and this work ethic and responsibility is displayed through my work as an undergraduate researcher as well. Overall, the personal goals that I hope to accomplish by double majoring in biomedical engineering and applied mathematics and statistics include becoming more confident in my ability to problem solve and being able to contribute my own work to research in the AMS and BME fields. Additionally, my main professional goal is to start my own research/analytics lab that is aimed at developing prostheses and bionic devices to help those who rely on this technology in order to live a happy and healthy life. This would be done by implementing both novel and historical engineering and mathematical principles in order to create the most cutting-edge designs. By majoring in applied mathematics and statistics in addition to biomedical engineering, I feel that I will continue to develop my computational skills and be able to apply these skills to real-world problems in order to make myself a better candidate for future job opportunities.
