About Leah Murthy

I am a conductor, music educator, writer, and an active performer as a vocalist and organist. Currently, I am conducting for the National Children's Chorus remotely, and editing for the International Journal of Education and the Arts. A doctoral candidate in the DMA program at Boston University, I am expecting to graduate in Spring 2024. Of late, I presented a half day workshop in Feb 2024 for the Rhode Island Music Educators Association on Popular Music Pedagogy and the Ukulele, as well as my doctoral research on student perspectives on their multi-musical choral educators at the Indiana Music Educators Association. Similar sessions are upcoming at the Connecticut Music Educators Association. I have also presented a NAfME Academy webinar called "Props Rock!" on utilizing props in chorus which I also shared at the NAfME Northeastern Conference and the Maryland Music Educators Conference in 2019. The Chorister and The American Organist have published my articles on blending traditional and contemporary music, props, and solfege. I am a professional guest blogger for Bear Paw Creek music props company as well. My previous position was in MD as a general music teacher K-5 and before that in CA as a music director for a church. There I played the organ, rehearsed, and directed the adult choir and the children's choir that I founded. That position was an amazing opportunity to perform as an organist, pianist, vocalist, and conductor as well as affording me opportunities to work with the praise band and coordinate our performances with outside instrumentalists, with much success. It has been my honor to have lived all over the world including, Morocco, Italy, South Korea, India and Germany (2x). World travel and ethnomusicology are also interests of mine, and I have now visited every inhabited continent!
