Background
About Lee Eisold
How can we recognise, unlearn and minimise discriminatory behaviour and microaggressions within our community spaces, organisations, classrooms, political organising or wherever else we might be? How can activist actions and community organising welcome and include everyone? To find answers (or rather many more questions!), I ventured into a PhD on the question of “How does intersectionality work in activism?” I had the amazing opportunity to collaborate with activists engaged in a variety of struggles in Flanders (Belgium) to shine a light on different aspects of activism with an intersectional lens: different understandings of intersectionality, negative feelings in coalition-building and a perceived lack of time. We exchanged ideas, discussed, got stuck, got rejected, re-organised and struggled through. Academic and non-academic outputs from this collaborative process are in the making and I can’t wait to see how they will evolve. As we all know, there is never enough time and money for the fun, energising and most important parts of research. As the SOLiDi (Solidarity in Diversity) international training network draws to a close, I am preparing to build my own path through our uncertain present and towards a better future. I am continuing to put my training and research insights to work where they can have the most impact: in conversation and collaboration with others. I am part of the Critical Diversity Collective that offers workshops on a range of antidiscrimination and empowerment topics for a broad audience. You can also find me with local activist collectives in Belgium, such as Let’s Talk About Nonbinary.(pronouns: they/them)
