About Liam Obrien

Academic Geographer writing about political, economic, and cultural change in the contemporary development landscape. I hold particular expertise in South-South Cooperation and post-Aid transitions. My research contributions have sought to understand how emerging actors and practices challenge, or reinforce, contested power relations in the field of development. Located at the intersection of postcolonial and development studies, I seek to challenge the continuing legacies of colonial and imperial domination, including, geographies of subordination, inequality, dependency, and uneven development. I am currently working on understanding the role of space and place in the increasingly significant Chinese Belt and Road Initiative, including, the Digital Silk Road. I have an empirical interest in Africa-China development cooperation and expertise in qualitative research methods.
