About Lisandra Matos

My academic background includes an MSc in Marine Environmental Protection from Bangor University, which I attended as a recipient of the highly competitive British Council Scholarship for Women in STEM. This prestigious scholarship, aimed at empowering women in science, attracted over applications, and I was honoured to be selected as one of only six recipients. My dissertation research, conducted in partnership with the Welsh Government, focused on the vulnerability of the UK fishing fleet to climate change. This experience honed my research, analytical, and communication skills, enabling me to present complex information in a clear and concise manner. As a Fisheries Liaison Officer (FLO) operating throughout the UK, I have a strong understanding of the challenges and opportunities in balancing marine conservation with the needs of the fishing industry. Growing up in a coastal community, with a grandfather who was a fisherman, instilled in me a deep appreciation for the delicate balance between livelihoods and environmental protection. This personal connection, coupled with my professional experience in the Offshore Renewable Energy and Subsea Cables sectors, has equipped me with the skills to facilitate effective communication and collaboration between diverse stakeholders, including developers, fishers, and policymakers. I am adept at navigating complex discussions, finding common ground, and fostering understanding to achieve sustainable outcomes for both the industry and the marine environment. I believe in the power of collaboration to achieve meaningful results in marine conservation. I am keen to connect with individuals and organisations who share this belief and are working towards a more sustainable future for our oceans.
