About Lori Spies
Lori A. Spies is an associate professor at the Baylor University Louise Herrington School of Nursing. Specializing in global health and building capacity in health care providers, she has taught global health and international clinical courses on the graduate level since 2004. Dr. Spies coordinates global endeavors for the Louise Herrington Nursing School and facilitates student and faculty engagement in initiatives in Ethiopia, Hong Kong, India, Peru, Uganda, Vietnam and Zambia. Dr. Spies serves as the chair of the practice committee for the International Council of Nurses Advanced Practice Nursing Network and is past president of the North Texas Nurse Practitioners. Dr. Spies is co-founder of the North Texas African Health Initiative and has worked actively in Uganda to build nurse leadership and research capacity since 2007. She has led faculty and nurse development workshops in Ethiopia, India, Uganda, Vietnam, and Zambia. Dr. Spies has an active funded program of research with the overarching goal of sustainably improving global health outcomes. Her research focuses on building capacity in nurses and other health care providers to address the priority population health issues associated with non-communicable diseases in adults. She was awarded a 2017-2019 Fulbright Global US Scholar Award. The Fulbright research project, A Multinational Collaborative Initiative to Develop Country-Specific Nurse Implemented Hypertension Interventions, will provide best practices for culturally relevant and contextually congruent nursing education related to hypertension diagnosis and intervention in India, Vietnam, and Zambia. Her current research endeavors focus on nurse-led interventions for hypertension, non-communicable diseases, and nurse leadership in East Africa. As a part of the International Council of Nurses Research team, she is studying resiliency and the COVID pandemic in Advanced Practice Nurses from 54 countries.
