About Madeleine Smith

A senior international development professional with an MPA in International Management, and over 25 years of experience in managerial and technical positions in 20 countries. She is an expert in multi-sectoral approaches and integration. Her primary technical sector expertise span food security, agriculture, nutrition, livelihoods, risk management and resilience. She has also worked on global health, education, peacebuilding, and disaster response and recovery. Prior to joining USAID, Ms. Smith’s recent roles include advancing nutrition-sensitive agriculture and food systems, social protection, and resilience programming for the USAID Bureau of Resilience Environment and Food Security and overseas Missions, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, the Government of Malawi, and the World Bank Group Sudan and Sahel. She is highly accomplished in leading major resource mobilization initiatives, specializing in multi-sectoral food security, nutrition, and resilience, and agricultural value chain programming. She conducted livelihoods assessments, program evaluations, organizational capacity assessments, and trainings on gender, women's empowerment, and program design. Ms. Smith is a skilled leader and has held senior roles overseeing portfolios valued over US$ 20 million annually funded by the U.S. Government, UN organizations, and other donors. She speaks fluent French.
