About Marek Vidis

Since I was a little kid, I was fascinated by electronics. I still remember the amazing moment when I was 10 and built my first amplifier. Bringing transistor circuits alive soon became my hobby and I continued pursuing it during university by picking a semiconductors-related field of study. My goal was to combine Resistive Switching and Gas Sensing, two traditionally unrelated effects. Despite my supervisor calling it a ”high risk, high gain mission,” I signed up for it. The master's degree program turned out unsuitable for completing the mission. However, only complete work counts. Moreover, I hate to quit and therefore I returned to lab that same summer and continued the mission by pursuing a PhD. This effort bore fruit, including a paper in Applied Physics Letters and a Utility Model patent submission.I love physics because instead of just stating a result, it teaches the way to arrive there. During my PhD, I learned to analyze cutting-edge information and move R&D forward. This period also taught me how to be self-motivated and committed to the mission. Python became a great tool and helped me process the large data files.Listening in the classroom is a great way to gain knowledge but real-life experience is even better. Therefore, I took every opportunity to gain practical skills (incl. at the Slovak Academy of Science, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and MediaTech company) when student duties allowed me to. During the semester, I devoted my free time and energy to the Student Pastoral Center, where I had joined the Technical Team. There I developed quick problem-solving capabilities and later also my soft skills by having been a team lead for one year. It was the perfect place to put my ideas and MCU DIY projects into practice, and I was motivated by the satisfaction of creating a useful device which serves others.
