About Mark Docherty

I have now retired from a career lifetime of service to the NHS. I have worked with many of the best people in the NHS. I have been privileged to serve and help people often at the most difficult time in their life. In my retirement I am doing some work for the Midlands Air Ambulance Charity as a Professional Advisor. I qualified as a nurse in 1987 and spent nearly 20 years working in the acute hospital sector and community services in and around the Midlands. In 2009 I got the opportunity to venture into the pre-hospital world where I stayed until my retirement in 2023; this has been the highlight of my career and I have loved every minute of this, working alongside some of the best clinicians in healthcare I have had the most amazing career that has exceeded all my expectations. I am now going to pursue some of my personal goals which are very much related to motorbiking, travel and family time. My two granddaughters will get plenty of time with Gradad. I previously held some national roles including Chair of the National Ambulance Commissioners Group, hosted by the NHS Confederation, and membership of the joint DH/DfT National UKSAR, HEMS, Police Helicopter intra-operability working Group. In November 2022, I stood down (due to retirement) as the longest standing judge of the National Air Ambulance Awards; I have written a chapter on ethical commissioning for a book on the Management of Emergency Ambulance Services published by Springer Publication, USA as part of a three volume edited series on the management of emergency ambulance, police and fire & rescue services.
