About Mason Chiu

Working in the Downtown Eastside for the past 9 years, I have had opportunities in both the non-profit and public sector to develop strong skills in grant writing, program facilitation, project management, community building, and client-centred service. Most recently as a Case Manager for WorkBC, I continue to serve the Downtown Eastside Community and have had the privilege of honing new expertise in interpreting and upholding Provincial Ministry policy, individualized client evaulations, assessments, and service plans, public service administration, and maintaining organization and efficiency in the midst of high client caseloads to meet the needs of all stakeholders. I hold a Master of Science degree in Welfare Policies and Management from Lund University, where I focused on community governance with an emphasis on socioeconomic inequality, how individuals navigate urban food geographies and ongoing racialised environmental injustice, and the ways in which non-profit actors are affected by contexts of municipal policy institutions, international politics, and climate change. My thesis was a phenomenological study on the perceptions of state institutions among the actors of Vancouver's food justice and sovereignty movements. I am interested in policy structure design that is informed by both academic and lived experiences. I also have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology and Environment and Society from the University of British Columbia, where I was involved in the community food systems and sustainability movement as a student leader and intern.
