Background
About Matanya Boyd
Community Outreach Specialist December 2018 to Present While I am still apart of the Fetal & Infant Mortality Review team, I have taken on a new position of a Community Outreach Liaison for City of Milwaukee Health Department that is focused on safe sleep practices for infants. In my new role I conduct and oversee the Safe Sleep Clinics and home visitations for the Milwaukee Cribs for Kids (C4K) Program. I provide the awareness, education, and recommendations for the best practices for keeping babies the safest in their sleep environments. Part of the education I provide to family is providing them with evidence-based information as well as the number of infants that have been lost do to unsafe sleep environments and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). I encourage family to take the education and recommendations that is provided and use those practices in the home to reduce the risk of SIDS and other sleep related infant death. FIMR is still doing the hard work of trying to lower our infant mortality rates in the City of Milwaukee communities through our recommendations. Fetal and Infant Mortality Review (FIMR) is a community-based and action oriented process to improve service systems and resources for women, infants, and families. This evidence-based process examines fetal and infant deaths, determines preventability and engages communities to take action. In my position, one of my key duties is to bring understanding and awareness to the communities and healthcare officials, professionals and providers through maternal interviews so that the information collected can be used to decrease the amount of fetal and infant deaths. These efforts to decrease the number of infants deaths, especially among African Americans are also done through the studies of the prenatal and post partum care that a mother receives during their pregnancy as well as discussions/actions taken to prevent death as an outcome.
