About Mateo Burtch

I've been working as a tech writer since slightly before Deuteronomy was penned, but my real ambition is to invent a self-folding pillow. I'm also a freelance illustrator and cartoonist.(See my profile picture.) I've been a technical writer and communicator for pretty much forever. How long, actually? Well, I wrote the original user's manual for the wheel.("Warning: do not place foot under product.") Actually, I started out as a self-taught programmer (C, BASIC, machine and assembly language, later OO languages), back in the days when coders had to physically hew 1s and 0s out of rock, and debugged their programs by throwing them off of cliffs. I've contracted as a tech writer since 1987 at some well-known companies (Sun, Oracle, Netflix, VMware, etc.) as well as several smaller companies such as Bob's U-Pick-Em Apps and Ed's Wholesale Computer Lingo, both of which I just made up right now. Along the way I produced old-fashion paper books, web pages, online help, and instructional videos ("Warning: do not place product over foot"), using Framemaker, Word, Camtasia, SGML and XML authoring tools, a very sharp pencil, and more. I've written everything from highly technical compiler manuals and network security API guides to PowerPoint presentations and videos for people who are not sure which is their computer and which is their coffee maker. I enjoy moonlight walks on the beach and cozy evenings by the fire with-oh, wait, sorry, wrong social medium.
