Background

About Matteo Urbani

Energy analyst with 10+ years of experience in the field of electricity and gas markets, throughout the course of my career I worked as energy analyst and consultant on different projects for energy companies like EDF, Enel and Gaz de France (Engie), before joining OME, with a particular focus on energy and environmental issues in the Euro-Mediterranean area. My educational background is based on international relations, geopoliticas of energy, industrial oprganization, energy policy and market regulation from a political, legal and economic perspective. Within my career, I developed skills in terms of regional market governance and projects implementation working with international institutions as European Commission, Union for the Mediterranean and International Energy Agency; regional organizations as Mediterranean Energy Regulators (Medreg), European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (ENTSO-E) and Mediterranean Transmission Operators (MedTSO); and other sector-based entities as RES4MED, Medgrid, Comelec, Medelec, Desertec-Dii, MEDENER, AUE, Eurelectric and Eurogas. The main topics I have treated during my career are- Electricity and gas market liberalization, from an institutional and regulatory point of view, at national and regional level, through the study of existing market structures and the assessment of market opening on a country basis- Regional cooperation and electricity market integration in the Euro-Mediterranean area: investments development (installed capacity, transit and trade infrastructures, cross-border interconnections, demand response, etc.) and financing issues (investment protection, risk assessment, incentive mechanisms and regulatory framework)- Environmental challenges in the energy field and policies to foster the deployment of renewable energies and promote energy efficiency at national and regional level- Security of energy supply, from a geopolitical and economic point of view: energy mix and supply routes diversification, system reliability and network constraints, energy storage, increasing intermittency of power generation and flexible capacity remuneration schemes, all within the context of the energy transition process.
