About Matthew Bach

As an accomplished senior professional with advanced degrees from leading universities, over 15€ million in managed projects, and significant management experience, I bring extensive knowledge of climate, energy and sustainability and a track record of designing innovative international programs. My expertise in policy, leadership, and management has been honed through a diverse career history, including founding ICLEI Europe's justice, equity and democracy program, coordinating multi-stakeholder processes in 20 countries, managing EU-funded research and innovation projects, and advising global firms on economic, environmental, and political issues in the EMEA region. In my current role as Head of Justice, Equity and Democracy at ICLEI Europe, I lead a dedicated team and oversee a diverse project portfolio, while managing strategic partnerships with senior counterparts. I have also successfully acquired funding for an EU-wide policy campaign. Prior to this, I co-convened the network of European Green Capitals for the European Commission and organized events at major fora. My achievements include serving as an EU Climate Pact Ambassador for the European Commission and a Research Fellow at the University at Buffalo School of Law, as well as delivering keynote speeches at the UN HABITAT World Urban Forum, URBACT City Festival, Council of Europe World Forum for Democracy 2021, and OECD COP26 Virtual Pavilion. I have also published a series of articles on the oil and gas sector's role in climate action. I am a native English and French speaker with professional fluency in German and intermediate proficiency in Russian.
