Background

About Matthias Troffaes

I am a full professor working on the borderline between probability and statistics, helping decision makers to act with confidence even if there is limited data or limited expert information on some important aspects of their problem. My expertise includes modelling and quantifying severe uncertainty and decision making under severe uncertainty, using probability bounding (also called imprecise probability). I enjoy working with researchers in applied areas, and with industrial partners, to solve problems that require mathematical modelling of severe uncertainty, and to enable and/or improve decision making processes that are robust under such uncertainties.I currently focus on algorithms for propagating probability bounds through decision problems, and on applications thereof in engineering (such as power systems) and in environmental sciences, where there is benefit from careful modelling of severe uncertainty. I strongly believe in the interplay between applications and theory, where theory can enable new computational methods to drive new applications, and where applications can drive and inspire the need for new theoretical developments.Feel free to reach out if you are interested in working together.
