About Melanie Krojer

Growing up, I was already obsessed with science. Right after wanting to become a cat, my next career aspiration was to become an astrophysicist. In school I realized that the stars are too far away and I prefer a science having more potential applications. Thus, I enrolled to study chemistry. Apparently, this was not the most obvious choice for the people surrounding me, who thought that something more creative and communicative would have been a better fit. Nevertheless, it has been an amazing journey. I enjoyed learning how the world works on molecular level and how to connect dots to a full picture. During my PhD studies, reality hit: it turned out that research can be very frustrating and drug development is not as manageable as I wanted it to be. I haven’t mention it before, but I love to organize and plan, and if things don't go according to plan, I get restless and try to find better solutions quickly. So, hoping to find the right balance between science and manageability, I interned at the European Patent Office. And even though patent law can be a bit dry here and there, I'm still amazed at the possibilities that IP offers to improve businesses. In IP management I have found a way to use my strengths and to be in direct contact with science and innovation; with efficient management of IP, I foster new technologies and contribute to forward facing business decisions. As a creative quick learner and motivated team player, I particularly enjoy the cross-functional collaboration that my job requires to move things forward and to find out-of-the-box-solutions.
