About Melissa Hefferlin
My artistic journey has not been conventional. I trained in Los Angeles, Tennessee, and even behind the Iron Curtain, where I was the only American studying at the Russian Academy of Arts during the Soviet period. In 1993, I turned professional, dedicating myself to paint, charcoal, and printmaking tools to solve visual puzzles and transform chaos into beauty. I’ve always been drawn to beauty and order—first through creative writing and violin, and ultimately through painting and printmaking. Humor also runs through my work, because I find it a profound way to reflect on life’s elusive nature. Often, my voice takes shape in avatars, the most frequent of which is Wilhemina, a winged rabbit who bridges the whimsical and the profound. I love using pictures to tell stories. Today, I divide my time between Europe and the United States with my artist husband. Together, we home base is a historic 1919 bank building—an ever-evolving restoration project that doubles as both home and inspiration.
