About Michael Bachmann

The interplay of biology and physics always fascinated me: How can the interaction of two inanimate objects like atoms be at the core of living objects? Because I also want to share my passion for such questions, I spent time mastering personal skills that allow me to communicate and present such difficult topics. These two sentences summarize my career. In more detail, I have 10 years of experience in cell and molecular biology and 5 years of experience in structural biology. My focus has been on cell adhesion and the extracellular matrix, in particular integrin receptors and TGFβ cytokines. This focus also brought with it a detailed understanding of the role of these proteins in cancer, inflammation, and in developmental diseases. My experience spans the whole range of cell and molecular techniques applied to these proteins: expression in different cell types, characterization in cells and in vitro, protein-protein binding, expression and purification, mutagenesis, structural analysis, cryo-EM. I have authored more than 10 articles on these topics that have been published in peer-reviewed journals. Hoping to share this passion, I developed a strong interest in communication models and ways to present such complicated topics in an impactful way. Part of this journey was a dedicated study program to become a teacher in biology and physics at a German Gymnasium. These lessons included training in communication models, evaluation of myself and others, presentation techniques, assessment, pedagogy and andragogy, and didactics of physics and biology. I am looking to make use of my interests in the natural sciences and in personal interactions in a job that helps to make a difference. And helping others by working in the biopharmaceutical or biotechnological sector would certainly tick these boxes. My interests and my motivation make me suitable for a wide range of positions, in particular R&D, application specialist, project manager, account manager, and more.
