Michael is the founder and president of SQThinking, Inc, publisher of research-based executive functioning learning tools. Teachers receive the explicit step-by-step tools that leads to successful student writing. All tools include school and district-wide professional development, progress monitoring and are linked to the latest research in improving teacher instruction that leads to student success. SQ SYNTAX is the initial writing program in the series followed by SQ Sentence and SQ Write. To begin, students explicitly learn the role parts of speech play in a sentence with a focus on word function and word order. Students internalize syntax skills that directly lead not just to effective sentence writing, but also to improved reading comprehension as they learn how to break sentences down into their functional parts. Once mastered, students move to SQ Sentence. SQ SENTENCE is an explicit research-based sentence writing program that teaches students to write complex sentences with correct syntax. Students follow 10 specific "SQ Sentence Maps", or syntax maps. The Maps serve as a sentence writing roadmap leading to effective complex sentence syntax. Most importantly, students see how the syntax parts sequentially fit together to create a whole sentence. Once mastered, students move to SQ Write. SQ WRITE is a comprehensive paragraph and essay writing curriculum that applies an executive functioning approach to teaching and learning how to write effectively. SQ Write employs a simple yet powerful process that can be used in all tiers of instruction to help elementary through high school students become self-reliant writers who create high-quality writing products. It all begins with the SQ Write Q-Card and Thought Organizer. Students are not born with natural executive functioning, organizing skills. Yet, they are expected to organize and plan. SQ ORGANIZE is a research-based executive functioning system that uses direct instruction to provide students with simple yet powerful tools to become independent planners and organizers who get their school work done on time! SQ Organize applies research-based executive functioning skills to develop 21st-century students who independently initiate, self-monitor, and complete homework. SQ Organize directly and explicitly teaches students to follow proven routines and sequenced self-questions that result in independent planning, organizing and self-monitoring. Students follow three explicit routines leading to self-reliance: Start-of-Week, End-of-Class, and End-of-School-Day Routine.
