Having been in the Career Coaching field for a long time, people often ask about career planning. I have come to the conclusion that “career planning” is probably a myth. It is more important to know yourself well and to be opportunistic and seize the day when possibilities open up. To position yourself for a long and successful career there are few things to do. Develop an attitude of CURIOSITY. Be curious about what makes you unique. Your STRENGTHS are the capabilities that come naturally to you. Your SKILLS are the things you have learned and are really good at. Your PASSIONS give energy to those strengths, and make you want to get up in the morning and do great things. Your PERSONALITY is the set of traits that make you an individual and differentiate you from everyone else. Be curious about the WORLD around you. What are important problems to solve in the world of today? Can you contribute to solutions to environmental problems? Energy problems? People problems? Transportation problems? Where in the world can you make your best contribution based on your strengths, skills, passions and personality? Now who can you align yourself with to work on these solutions? Be curious about the FUTURE. It’s coming at us fast, even at an exponential rate. What is happening in your industry/occupation? What could happen if YOU made it happen? What are the trends that will make a difference in the near future? Also be KIND to one another. Sometimes life is hard and we need some softness in our life. And be GRATEFUL for any blessings and relationships that bring you grace. Ask for help when you need it and give help when asked. Be COURAGEOUS and overcome the fears that hold you back. And wherever you can, have FUN and make things fun for others. And let me know if I can help.
