Background
About Morie Ford
I am passionate about making literacy accessible for those who have learning challenges or face socio-economic or environmental obstacles. Humans have an amazing appetite for learning and I believe that access to the right educational environment and support can spark growth in ways that go far beyond knowledge and skills, building self-confidence and empowering development that in some cases is truly transformative. In my current role as Family Literacy Outreach Coordinator at Mount Pleasant Neighbourhood House (MPNH), I work with immigrant and refugee families, providing literacy support through mentorship and tutoring programs. Together, with a dedicated and talented team of co-workers, we aim to play a leadership role in building a healthy and engaged community by connecting people and strengthening their capacity to create change. I absolutely love my work. Prior to MPNH, I was Human Resources Manager and Case Manager at BrainBoost Education for over 10 years. At BrainBoost, I provided personalized programs for kids, and assisted with recruiting, training and managing over 40 employees. I have start-up blood in my veins, having founded and run several small businesses, and co-founded a literacy program for elementary students in Vancouver. I am currently board chair of Writers’ Exchange, a non-profit that gets Vancouver’s inner-city kids excited about reading and writing. I have a deep background in staff and volunteer management, fundraising, project and strategic planning, marketing, business and economic development. I have a proven track record of providing strong leadership, instilling collaborative culture, and bringing out the best in organizations and their people—in both the for profit and non-profit worlds.
