About Nathan Toohey

Nathan has over 20 years of consulting and research experience in geotechnical engineering, geomechanics, poromechanics, and geophysics. He specializes in the technical oversight of geotechnical design for mine tailings storage facilities (TSFs). Nathan's project experience includes tailings management for operational and reclaimed mine TSFs, as well as the design of greenfield slurry tailings and filter-cake storage facilities. He has consulting experience with tailings storage facility design in the United States, Canada, Mexico, India, Brazil and Serbia. Nathan’s background includes field investigation design, geotechnical and hydrogeological site characterization, advanced geotechnical laboratory testing, material characterization, geotechnical instrumentation, seepage/slope stability/deformation analyses, liquefaction-triggering assessments, seismic and vibration analysis in addition to finite element and finite difference numerical analysis using advanced constitutive models. Nathan has worked as a geomechanical engineer for a microseismic geophysical service provider providing internal software development of geomechanical reservoir fracture modeling. He has also served as a post-doctoral research associate developing real-time, vibration-based monitoring systems for tunneling and subsea geo-construction applications.
