About Neil Haave
I have been teaching at the Augustana Campus of the University of Alberta since 1990 in the areas of biochemistry, cell biology, histology, and history & philosophy of biology. I am interested in using high impact teaching practices as advocated by George Kuh which serve to increase students' engagement in their own education and learning. I use team-based learning as the instructional strategy in many of my courses to give students practice using their newly earned knowledge in-class rather than with homework assignments. I am also interested in using e-portfolios across students' degree programs as a strategy that encourages student reflection on how they learn and why they learn. My hope is that if they consider what their learning philosophy is, maybe that will enable them to both seek out what interests them and use learning strategies that are effective for their personality. Additionally, I am trying to find teaching strategies that scaffold the mastery of research skills into students' university studies.
