Background

About Nicholas Clarke

I have spent over 20 years building a major body of research advancing our understanding of how the quality of work relationships (manager-subordinate relations, social relations) influences HRD effectiveness and outcomes in organisations. This body of work comprises three major connecting themes that have evolved over this time as follows (1) Investigating the effect of relational quality on HRD interventions in Health and Social Care (2) Identifying how emotional intelligence influences relational behaviours for work, and (3) Examining leadership development from a relational perspective. My initial work has influenced thinking in the academic HRD field directly through showing how the work environment in social care counteracts training effects as well as speaking indirectly to researchers investigating training effectiveness in other low support/high autonomy work environments. With the recent changes to training in social care heralded by the Options for Excellence Review of the social care workforce the impact of this work is now being seen in more tangible ways as a number of key recommendations from my research for improving training transfer in social care are taken up by the government’s Skills For Care regional offices. More recently my work examining the role of emotional intelligence in relationship quality as well as developing and testing a theory of Emotional Intelligence Development has resulted in my receiving invitations to give presentations at conferences and seminars in the UK, Channel Islands and Greece, coverage in the national press, as well as consultancy on leadership development to the energy company N-Power, Rolls Royce Fuel Systems, Hampshire Adults Services and the UK Home Office (Drugs Misuse). Specialties: Emotional Intelligence, Teams, Workplace Learning
