About Oliver Schmidt

Oliver Schmidt is an experienced consultant, project manager and trainer. For over 20 years he has been supporting financial sector development in Sub-Sahara-Africa and in South Asia. He trained several hundred managers and board members of small, mostly rural microfinance institutions, as well as students who entered the financial sector afresh. Among others, Oliver led microfinance product development projects in Uganda, developed training courses for practitioners in India, designed microfinance management systems for farmers organizations in Malawi, and build risk management systems in Ghana. Oliver holds a PhD (German Dissertation) from the University of Speyer and a master degree from the University of Muenster, Westphalia. He started his career in 1993 as a trainee of the cooperative bank of his home town Brilon (Volksbank Brilon eG), from which he was awarded a professional certificate in banking. From 2010-2012, Dr. Schmidt guided the creation of a recognized academic department for banking and microfinance. From 2013 to 2016, he led the largest faculty of Mountains of the Moon University: MMU's School of Business and Management Studies has about 900 under- and postgraduate students and 40 academic and administrative staff members. Under his leadership, the school initiated a number of strategic partnerships, reformed its research teaching, pioneered research projects in entrepreneurship and financial behaviour at MMU, and added 4 undergraduate and 1 postgraduate study courses.
