About Patrick Durney

I am a seasoned hydrogeologist and modelling scientist with a robust track record in groundwater science and environmental research. My academic background includes a BSc in Geology, a Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering Geology, and a Master's in Water Resource Management from the University of Canterbury. I am a research scientist Lincoln Agritech Ltd in the Environmental Research Group. My research focuses on statistical modelling and machine learning, unsaturated flow and transport modelling, integrated water resource modelling, and the assessment of groundwater mounding from artificial recharge. I contributed significantly to major projects like the Braided Rivers Programme and the Critical Pathways Programme, aimed at addressing complex hydrological issues. I have also contributed to the NIWA lead research programme Future Coasts Aotearoa, and am currently working on the Lincoln Agritech led Emerging Climatic Pressures. My earlier roles include Computational Hydrogeologist at Komanawa Solutions Ltd, Senior Groundwater Scientist at DHI Water and Environment and Environment Canterbury Regional Council. In these positions, I specialised in the hydrogeology of the Canterbury Plains and played a role in regional water management strategies. My work in setting groundwater allocation limits for Canterbury stands as a testament to my impact on regional hydrological policy. As an active member of the New Zealand Hydrological Society and the International Association of Hydrogeologists since 2010, I have remained at the forefront of hydrological research. My involvement in these communities has enabled me to contribute through numerous presentations at annual conferences and technical reports. A snapshot of my key contributions includes: Lead authorship in various technical reports and presentations at national conferences, demonstrating my expertise in groundwater science and modelling. Significant involvement in groundbreaking projects such as the Hinds Managed Aquifer Recharge trial and the development of environmental policies. Contributions to major engineering projects and groundwater replenishment schemes, emphasising my role in sustainable water management. I bring to the table a unique blend of technical expertise, practical experience, and a passion for sustainable water resource management. My career is marked by a commitment to using scientific insights to inform environmental policies and decision-making, ensuring a balance between development and ecological sustainability.
