Background
About Peter Arnds
I am an author, translator, and academic working at Trinity College Dublin, where I am a Fellow and Professor in Comparative Literature and German Studies. I was inducted into the Academia Europaea in 2018 and am a member of the PEN Centre for German-Speaking Writers Abroad. I have also held visiting positions at universities in Kabul, Delhi, Adelaide and Salamanca, as well as Middlebury College's Summer Language Institute. My academic publications include four books, including studies of the authors Wilhelm Raabe, Charles Dickens, and Günter Grass. In 2021 Bloomsbury published my most recent monograph ("Wolves at the Door: Migration, Dehumanization, Rewilding the World") which is available in paperback, hardback and ebook form. In 2015 I published "Lycanthropy in German Literature" with Palgrave Macmillan and edited the volume "Translating Holocaust Literature" for the German publishing house Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. My current research examines the links between cultural production and species politics as well as the philosophy of walking in world literature. I contribute to several international research networks, including Challenging Precarity: A Global Network and Narratives of Happiness and Resilience. My research has appeared in numerous journals and edited volumes in the fields of Comparative Literature, German and Italian Studies, Holocaust Studies, and the Environmental Humanities. My first novel (Searching for Alice) was published by Dalkey Archive Press in 2019 and I was longlisted for an IMPAC Dublin Literary Award in 2014 for my translation of Swiss playwright Patrick Boltshauser’s novel Stromschnellen (Rapids).
