About Peter Black

In 2018 I decided to take a step away from mainstream teaching. My vision remained to empower children and young people to fulfill their potential in different ways. I now tutor pupils approaching secondary transfer, offering students 11+ exam preparation & English/Maths skills development. I find this tremendously rewarding! In addition, I work for Surrey Arts within their Music Operations Team. This involves the placement of peripatetic instrumental teachers in schools & also supporting area ensembles in the south of the county. Giving back is a big driver for me, and I've enjoyed developing my volunteer skill set over time. In 2018 I completed NSPCC training, to become a volunteer counsellor for ChildLine at their London HQ. In 2019, I began mentoring undergraduate students as part of Kingston University’s Beyond Barriers EDI support programme. In 2023, I widened my volunteering to support the Kingston branch of MIND. I respond to adult enquirers over the phone and by e-mail. Where appropriate, I provide information, signposting and empathic listening as a member of their Advice Line.
