Background
About Peter Dehaas
Peter DeHaas is redefining "diversity" by advocating for the inclusion of individuals with disabilities and helping businesses recognize the value of accessibility in driving growth and opportunity. With expertise in economic development, housing advocacy, educational inclusion, and direct human services, Peter has worked with diverse communities, including veterans, the formerly incarcerated, youth, immigrants, and families. His career is centered on creating pathways to academic and economic inclusion for individuals with disabilities, including those who are deaf or hard of hearing, have intellectual and developmental disabilities, or face physical and mental health challenges. As founder and leader of the San Francisco Disability Business Alliance (SFDBA)—the first organization of its kind in the U.S—Peter is pioneering economic independence for individuals with disabilities through self-employment and small business ownership. Under his leadership, SFDBA has built strong partnerships between disability-owned businesses and major corporations like Kaiser Permanente and CIBC. Peter not only advocates for accessibility but also educates small businesses on the business value of creating inclusive environments, leading to stronger customer bases and expanded market opportunities. He collaborates with public agencies such as the Small Business Administration (SBA), Small Business Development Centers (SBDC), and the California Department of Rehabilitation to provide critical resources that ensure the long-term sustainability of these businesses. Peter also leverages technology solutions, DIY marketing, and philanthropy to support business growth and success. Fluent in American Sign Language (ASL), Peter has taught over future educators, social workers, nurses, and community advocates at San Francisco State University. A seasoned problem-solver, he has built successful public and private partnerships that create inclusive opportunities for people with disabilities. Peter’s work with SFDBA has earned several recognitions, including the 2023 Community Partnership Award from San Francisco State University and a 2024 Excellence in Business Awards finalist nomination in Diversity and Inclusion.
