Since September 2016 I have been employed with the City of Malden serving as the Supervisor of Buildings & Grounds for the School Department. I oversee the daily operations of seven school buildings totaling of approximately 1.2 million square feet and a custodial staff of 24. On a daily basis I respond to a wide range of calls from heating and cooling complaints to minor building repairs and assign to staff members as needed. Also on a regular basis I meet with service vendors and contractors dealing with building repairs and snow removal. A major aspect of my responsibilities is to work closely with the Public Facilities Department as they maintain final say and control of the public buildings within the city. I work closely with the Superintendent of Schools and report directly to the District Business Manager also while maintaining a direct link to the Director of Public Facilities creating a team with open communication and results oriented goals. We as a team have made great strides creating and taking on projects of daily maintenance routines, outsourcing of nightly cleaning work, preventative maintenance, and school appearance projects. Our goal is to bring the school buildings up to date pertaining to service contracts in keeping operating systems running smoothly and efficiently avoiding malfunction. We have also undertaken projects to make improvements for students such as repainting and relighting of the MHS pool, repainting and refinishing of gymnasium floors and repaint and freshen of several gym walls. These improvements though not major are just some examples of the team effort on issues that have focused on tasks that have been neglected in the past. We will continue to plan for the future with goals of capital improvement plans for lighting efficiency, roof and HVAC replacements as well as updating most building major systems as they approach their useful lifespan end.
