About Phillip Murphy

As an expert in underground mining safety and health management, with extensive experience embedding best practice across people, process, training and systems for top-tier employers, I have developed a versatile skillset, including the ability to design and execute comprehensive mining safety solutions. Core strengths include developing in-depth hazard risk assessments, training programmes and counterpart development systems with instructional design solutions targeted at national workforces with a wide range of literacy and numeracy levels. My career started with five years in practical mining, followed by employment with leading mining corporations, reducing risk, embedding safety-conscious cultures and improving incident management in Indonesia and Australia. Since 2014, I’ve been based in Indonesia, where I’ve played a central role in developing market-leading HSEQ functions with highly effective training programmes for large-scale mining workforces in challenging locations at PT Freeport and OK Tedi Mine. I’m enthusiastic, dedicated and build consensus through collaboration – there’s nothing more satisfying than seeing my ideas make a tangible difference to workforce safety. Over the course of my career, I’ve learnt the importance of using a flexible approach to engage effectively with people, developing my Bahasa Indonesia language skills, as well as designing innovative visual concepts that engage national workforces.
