Background
About Poling Bork
A simple goal at the heart of my work is to make life easier for people facing real challenges. I come from a computer science background then mental health and education, but what really drives me is designing practical, thoughtful solutions, especially where none seemed to exist before. Over the years, I’ve developed tools and experiences that have helped people communicate, connect, and grow in ways they couldn’t before. A few examples I’m especially proud of: 1) The first AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) tool designed specifically to help mute children express their needs while away from home (2010); 2) A series of digital games using voice recognition to support children with selective mutism (2012- ongoing); 3) A virtual reality platform that helps teens and adults with social anxiety practice real-life interactions in a safe, controlled way (since 2021); 4) The VSR technique which combines video self-modeling, stimulus fading, and reinforcement; and has helped children begin speaking in just a few hours (since 2015). These tools were built by listening to users, understanding their needs, and then prototyping, testing, and iterating, all through principles of design thinking. Over the years, I’ve led multidisciplinary teams, secured funding for big ideas, and advocated for others, plus earning recognition through awards like Brock University’s Excellence in Teaching the Large Class Award, Faculty of Math & Science Award for Excellence in Teaching, the Experiential Education Leadership Award, among others. I’ve also had the privilege of successfully nominating others for awards (including honorary degrees), something I find just as fulfilling as receiving one myself. A big part of my work has also been about the community. I founded the Selective Mutism Foundation of Canada, organized the first national conferences on the topic, and wrote VOCAL, a book that’s now been translated into 10 languages. While the projects have changed over time, what hasn’t is my approach: focus on people, listen carefully, solve what matters, and don’t be afraid to challenge the norm. These days, I’m especially interested in how thoughtful design, grounded in empathy and strategy, can be used to create scalable, lasting impact. I’m always open to connecting with others working in this space. Whether you’re building something new or reimagining what’s already there, I’d love to hear what you're working on. Let's connect!
