Background
About Pradeep Taneja
I am currently Deputy Associate Dean - International (India) in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Melbourne and a Senior Lecturer in Asian Politics. I joined the School of Social and Political Sciences in January 2006, where I teach and research primarily in the following areas: Asian Politics, especially Chinese and Indian politics, political economy and international relations of the Indo-Pacific region. I am also a Fellow of the Australia India Institute and an Associate of the Centre for Contemporary Chinese Studies at the University of Melbourne. Born and raised in India, I lived and worked in China for more than six years, including as a senior international trade policy consultant to the iron and steel industry, based in Wuhan. During 2002-2004, I worked in Bangkok as part of a multinational team to help set up the graduate program at a new Thai university. Earlier, I was Director of International Programs in the Graduate School of Management at La Trobe University. My professional career has combined teaching, consultancy and research across various fields. I am frequently interviewed by Australian and foreign media on developments in the Asia-Pacific region. My current research interests focus on: Sino-Indian relations; the rise of China as a regional and global power; the political implications of China’s energy security policy; and, the relationship between politics and business in China. I have also written on China’s relations with the European Union and continue to have an interest in the subject. I am on the editorial board of the Journal of Asian Security and International Affairs and Melbourne Asia Review.
