About Purnima Gupta

Research Highlights: 1. Molecular Oncology & Cancer Biology: My work in cancer research focuses on the role of viruses like Merkel Cell Polyomavirus and Human Papilloma Virus in cancer progression. I identified key molecular pathways involved in cellular proliferation and migration, leading to a deeper understanding of virus-induced tumorigenesis. Host-Pathogen Interactions: Early in my career, I identified critical immune evasion mechanisms used by Leishmania donovani, including its modulation of host cell apoptosis and immune responses. My studies on AKT/β-catenin signaling in macrophages have opened new avenues for therapeutic interventions against leishmaniasis. Rare Diseases: I worked on understanding mechanistic pathways leading to Arterio-Venous Malformations (AVM) and mutants responsible for Systemic Sclerosis and developed several diagnostic assays. Drug Discovery & Preclinical Research: In my current role at IRB Barcelona and UPF, I focus on drug discovery, particularly in molecular oncology. I employ high-throughput screening and NGS technologies to identify new drugs, aiming to translate laboratory findings into clinical applications. Methodology Development: I have developed numerous assays, including NGS protocols, ELISA, FACS, Alpha Assay and high-content imaging systems, contributing to the advancement of analytical techniques in oncology, rare diseases and immunology.
