About Ray Martin

I am a Kansas City native who has worked in a variety of different fields, but most of them lead back to marketing, communications and digital media. Currently I am serving as the Pastoral Associate for Communications and Parish Life at Church of the Ascension in Overland Park. I lead a team that publishes a weekly bulletin, email newsletters, social media posts, live streams of worship services and events, develops our website, manages the financial and volunteer giving of our members and carries out social events in order to promote a sense of community among our parishioners. Shortly after college where I majored in Music Composition at the University of Kansas, I worked in radio and TV advertising for companies like Susquehanna (Cumulus), Time Warner Cable (Spectrum), and Entercom (Audacy). I learned how to write persuasive commercial copy and incorporate advertising into a local business’ marketing campaign. I also gained a lot of insight into audio and video production. After my time in advertising I worked in insurance. I completed licensure in life and health insurance and worked for a funeral home specializing in pre-arranged planning and then Spring Venture Group where I was a Medicare Supplement Specialist in several states across the U.S. I really enjoyed working with people in an area of their lives where major decisions were being made. Additional areas where I’ve worked are in music and technology. I worked part-time in the early as the Youth Music Minister at Holy Trinity in Lenexa where we launched a new LifeTeen program along with a contemporary worship service. My obsession with music, sound reinforcement and A/V equipment lead me to serve as a Worship Leader and Tech Director and Valley View UMC (now Resurrection OP) from 2012-2016 and when I started working at Ascension I was leading worship at our Sunday evening contemporary service, managing the parish website and social media as well as developing the family life ministry. I still manage a lot of the A/V equipment on campus as one of the many hats one wears when working for a church.
