About Rhys Powell

With over 15 years of leadership experience in the community services and not-for-profit (NFP) sector, I have developed a strong strategic vision and a results-oriented approach in driving projects and initiatives aimed at supporting the most vulnerable members of our community. I possess specialized expertise in the areas of homelessness and suicide prevention, having managed the operational and service delivery aspects of a range of complex programs, including crisis intervention hubs, transitional housing, community outreach services, and suicide crisis prevention hotlines. In my current role as Corporate & Community Engagement Senior Manager at Uniting WA, I lead initiatives to foster strategic partnerships with corporate entities, community groups, educational institutions, and religious organizations. I oversee the development and execution of educational programs, public speaking engagements, and awareness campaigns focused on social justice, social impact, and the diverse array of services offered by Uniting WA to benefit the Western Australian community. I currently lead a dedicated team of staff and more than 350 volunteers, with a deep understanding of the intricacies involved in developing and managing a successful volunteer program. This includes recruitment, training, retention, and motivation, ensuring that volunteers are effectively aligned with the organization’s mission and values. Additionally, I spearhead Recipes For Change, a unique corporate team-building initiative at Uniting WA. This program offers participants the opportunity to engage with and learn about the vital work we do in addressing homelessness, followed by a hands-on cooking activity in which teams prepare meals for over 200 individuals experiencing homelessness.
